An ‘Ice’ move to Brooklyn

* As a longtime Islanders fan, I have mixed emotions with the team moving to Brooklyn. I had season tickets through the Stanley Cup years. The leaders of that team — Denis Potvin, Bryan Trottier, and Mike Bossy — helped hang those Stanley Cup banners from the top of the Nassau Coliseum, and the memories will last forever. Brooklyn will be a fine place to watch a hockey game. I would like to thank owner Charles Wang for keeping the team in New York. Hopefully the move will attract some top free agents. We’ll never forget the wonderful history of the Islanders, but it’s time to move on and look forward to the terrific future in their new home of Brooklyn.

* I have been a die-hard Islanders fan since the glory days of the late 1970s and early 1980s, so allow me to state this as clearly as possible: There is nothing wrong with the Nassau Coliseum. It has the best sight lines for hockey of any local arena and is by far the loudest building in the NHL when it’s full. The complaints never came from the fans, only the players, who griped about small locker rooms. Well, so what? All Charles Wang needed to do was shut the doors for one season and give the old barn a facelift. The Isles could have split home games at MSG and The Rock. The Islanders won four straight Stanley Cups (the last team to win four straight in any sport) and 19 straight playoff series (a record that will stand forever) on that ice. And now it’s history for the same reason Giants Stadium is history: No good reason.

Still Eli-te

* Last season, when Eli Manning said he was elite, everyone except his teammates and Giants fans laughed and snickered. What nerve? Who does he think he is? That was the reaction from the media and the majority of the NFL. Now, one season later, everyone wants a seat on the Eli bandwagon. Well here’s a message for all of you front-runners: We don’t want or need any of your phony praise and accolades, because we all know if Eli slips up even once you’ll go back to trashing him.

* Now that Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and Eva Longoria are no longer a couple, maybe he’ll engage in a more productive on-field relationship with at least one of his receivers.
