This week’s couple: Conversation starters

FIRST-DATE conversations can be seriously tricky. Fola, a 28-year-old stylist, and Genese, a 28-year-old digital production manager, found out just how awkward they can get when they talked family and future over dinner at Koi, the SoHo sushi eatery. Did chats about the past make for good fodder or did one of them fall victim to TMI?

He said:

Genese was attractive and shy, but I was excited about the date. I tried to break the ice with jokes. We talked about career, family, our likes and dislikes, why we were both single and for how long.

I didn’t like that she wasn’t supportive of her brother’s musical career. I’m a stylist, and I’m going back to school for filmmaking and comedy, so I might be a starving artist in the future.

Koi SoHo was awesome; the atmosphere was young and hip.

I walked Genese to the subway station, got her number and hugged her goodbye. I’m interested in getting to know her, but on a platonic level.

She said:

Fola has a nice smile and was dressed very well. However he is too short for my taste. I am only 5 feet but was taller than him with heels.

We talked about our families and about Newark, NJ, because we both lived there at one time. Fola brought up past relationships, even though I said talking about why your last relationship ended isn’t appropriate for a first date.

He complimented me throughout the date. It was nice, but I felt he made up his mind whether or not we’d be together based off my looks and not what I had to say.

The restaurant was lovely, and so was the service and food.

Fola waited with me for my train. We exchanged numbers, however, I am not interested in seeing him romantically.
