Connor Shaw threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score, and No. 17 South Carolina overcame the loss of tailback Marcus Lattimore for a 38-35 victory over Tennessee yesterday in Columbia, S.C.
Lattimore was taken to a hospital and is out indefinitely because of a serious injury to his right knee. The junior, who led the Gamecocks (7-2, 5-2 SEC) in rushing, was running through the left side when he was struck around the knees by Volunteers (3-5, 0-5) defensive back Eric Gordon. Lattimore’s right leg whipped around and slammed against the turf.
Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier didn’t give details of the injury, only that it was as devastating as the one that led to ligament and cartilage surgery on Lattimore’s left knee last fall.
Georgia 17, Florida 9
In Jacksonville, Fla., Georgia’s defense was far from soft — and now rival Florida is no longer undefeated or in charge in the SEC’s Eastern Division.
The No. 12 Bulldogs (7-1, 5-1) stuffed No. 3 Florida (7-1, 6-1) from every angle, forcing six turnovers and putting themselves on the cusp of the SEC championship game.
Arizona 39, USC 36
In Tucson, Ariz., Matt Scott had 469 total yards and accounted for four touchdowns, helping Arizona (5-3, 2-1 Pac-12) overcome a huge day by Southern California’s Marqise Lee to beat the 10th-ranked Trojans (6-2, 4-2).
Lee caught 16 passes for two touchdowns and a Pac-12 record 345 yards.
Alabama 38, Mississippi State 7
In Tuscaloosa, Ala., AJ McCarron passed for 208 yards and two touchdowns and No. 1 Alabama (8-0, 5-0 SEC) dominated No. 13 Mississippi State (7-1, 3-1).
Kansas St. 55, Texas Tech 24
In Manhattan, Kan., Collin Klein passed for 233 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 83 yards and a pair of scores and No. 4 Kansas State (8-0, 5-0 Big 12) roughed up No. 15 Texas Tech (6-2, 3-2) to improve to 8-0 for the first time since 1999.
Ohio State 35, Penn State 23
In State College, Pa., Braxton Miller was his usual self, running for 134 yards and accounting for three touchdowns a week after getting knocked out of a game, leading No. 9 Ohio State (9-0, 5-0 Big Ten) over Penn State (5-3, 3-1), snapping the Nittany Lions’ five-game winning streak in a matchup of the Big Ten’s bowl-banned perennial powers.
Washington 20, Oregon State 17
In Seattle, Bishop Sankey ran for 92 yards and two touchdowns, Travis Coons kicked a 30-yard field goal with 1:20 left and Washington (4-4, 2-3 Pac-12) took advantage of four interceptions from Oregon State’s Sean Mannion in an upset of the seventh-ranked Beavers (6-1, 4-1).
Texas A&M 63, Auburn 21
In Auburn, Ala., Johnny Manziel ran for three touchdowns and passed for two more — all in a little more than a half — and No. 22 Texas A&M (6-2, 3-2 SEC) routed struggling Auburn (1-7, 0-6).
In other action: No. 2 Oregon rolled over Colorado, 70-14; No. 11 Florida State demolished Duke, 48-7; No. 19 Stanford beat Washington State, 24-17; No. 20 Michigan fell 23-9 at Nebraska; No. 21 Boise State won its seventh straight, 45-14 over Wyoming; and No. 23 Ohio, in its first game as a ranked team since 1968, lost 23-20 to Miami of Ohio.
