Forgotten, but not gone: Staten Island after Sandy

The Issue: The devastating after-effects of Hurricane Sandy on Staten Island, and the need for assistance.

Once again, Mayor Bloomberg played Emperor Nero, fiddling while the city burns (“Deadly Defiance for Dad and Girl,” Nov. 2).

I have many friends who are on Staten Island working as firefighters and police officers.

Things are not as good as the emperor says.

Mayor Bloomberg, you are invited to come and stay at our homes in Staten Island to experience what we have been experiencing over the last few days.

Leave the suit home and come in sweats and layers, as the weather is getting cold.

We can take a ride to show you the houses still without power, the trees down, the houses destroyed — but can only do so if I still have gas because those gas lines are hard to find, and when we do, it is rationed. My freezer and fridge are mostly empty, as we had to throw almost everything out.

Mr. Mayor, you wouldn’t last a day in our shoes. Your people, the people who voted for you, are desperate and crying for help.

The media talk about Sandy’s effects on Long Island and Manhattan. We need more exposure for Staten Island. It is the forgotten borough.

Remember, we are living on an island. You can imagine how bad it is.

As a former Staten Islander, it pains me to see government choosing politics over people.

I was deeply disappointed in Bloomberg’s lack of response and compassion to the Staten Island victims of Superstorm Sandy struggling after the storm.

Look at the photos, the destruction and the faces of those who are missing loved ones, whose lives were destroyed and who still need our brave NYPD, FDNY and emergency responders.

Bloomberg is more concerned with eating steak dinners and endorsing presidential candidates than with getting help to those who need it most.

They call Staten Island the forgotten borough, but Sandy did not forget us. Neither should you. New York City is more than just the island of Manhattan, and that we should never forget.
