Howard Beach pizzeria stays open despite blackout resulting from Hurricane Sandy

No power, no problem. One pizzeria in Howard Beach isn’t letting anything get in the way of a good slice.

Romano’s restaurant is the only eatery on Cross Bay Boulevard that has been serving food to the blacked-out neighborhood since Tuesday.

“All you need is gas,” quipped owner Leo Gecaj. “I made a big batch of dough at a friend’s house in Ozone Park. I made the sauce here and bought some shredded cheese that I quickly used up.”

Gecaj even doled out free slices to National Guard soldiers and some residents who lined up outside on Wednesday.

“It’s the right thing to do. I’m trying to help the community because they need it.”

Two blocks away, Gino’s restaurant reopened while it juiced up with a generator.
