MLB: Marlins hire Redmond as skipper

Mike Redmond was named manager of the Marlins, returning to a team that he helped to a World Series title as a catcher back in 2003. Redmond, 41, signed a three-year deal to replace Ozzie Guillen, who was fired Oct. 23 after a 69-93 season.

The Rays are bringing 81-year-old Don Zimmer back for the 2013 season as a senior adviser, marking his 10th with the Rays and 65th season in professional baseball. … The Phillies picked up the $5 million 2013 option on Carlos Ruiz and declined options on utility man Ty Wigginton and reliever Jose
Contreras. The Phillies also gave third baseman Placido Polanco a $1 million buyout.

GOLF: Oosthuizen, Scott lead in China

Louis Oosthuizen and Adam Scott took advantage of the par 5s at Mission Hills and each had a 7-under 65 to lead the HSBC Champions after the first round in Shenzhen, China. Two-time HSBC Champions winner Phil Mickelson was a stroke back along with Bubba Watson, Shane Lowry of Ireland and Peter Hanson of Sweden.

Defending champion Jay Don Blake shot a 6-under 64 to take the first-round lead in the Champions Tour’s season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Scottsdale, Ariz.
