D-Day for BP oil-spill deal

NEW ORLEANS — Today is the deadline for plaintiffs to opt out of a proposed class-action settlement of claims from BP’s 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The settlement’s architects are confident that there won’t be enough dropouts to scuttle the estimated $7.8 billion deal.

BP has the right to terminate the agreement if an undisclosed number of claimants opt out of the deal.

In an e-mail, plaintiffs’ attorney Steve Herman said he sees “very little chance” the deal will fail based on the number of opt-outs.
