Evacuated Manhattan inmates moved to upstate prisons

New York corrections officials say it will be weeks before the 153 women inmates evacuated from a medium-security prison in lower Manhattan are returned to the building.

Inmates at Bayview prison were moved Monday to the Bedford Hills and Taconic prisons in Westchester County and the Beacon prison in Dutchess County because of Superstorm Sandy.

Corrections spokesman Peter Cutler says it’s unclear how long inmates will remain at the upstate prisons, though it will definitely be a few weeks.

Bayview, built in 1931 at 11th Avenue and 20th Street, has views of the Hudson River and stands next to a new luxury condominium.

Saltwater flooding affected the prison’s boiler and electrical systems.
