Sproles on Saints’ shelf

Saints running back and return specialist Darren Sproles underwent surgery for a broken hand and won’t be able to play Monday night against the Eagles at the Superdome.

Sproles, who set an NFL record with 2,696 all-purpose yards last season, will be re-evaluated next week to determine if he can play against the Falcons.

Sproles ranks second on the Saints (2-5) in receiving, third in rushing and handles both kickoffs and punts.

“It’s next man up,” interim coach Joe Vitt said.

JETS: Rookie linebacker Marcus Dowtin was fined $15,750 for hitting Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore in the head area during last week’s loss to Miami.

LIONS: Running back Jahvid Best will stay on the physically unable to perform list for the year.

Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said medical experts have recommended Best not return to the field this season. Best hasn’t played in more than a year because of concussion problems.

DOLPHINS: Quarterback Ryan Tannehill (left leg) is listed as questionable for tomorrow’s game at Indianapolis, and coach Joe Philbin said there’s no timetable for a decision on whether he’ll play.

COWBOYS: Running back DeMarco Murray will miss his third consecutive game because of a sprained right foot.

Receiver Dez Bryant, who came down hard on his hip on what appeared to be a go-ahead touchdown against the Giants, is listed as questionable.

BROWNS: Defensive tackle Phil Taylor has been activated from the physically unable to perform list and will play tomorrow against Baltimore.

Taylor missed Cleveland’s first eight games after undergoing surgery on a torn chest muscle.

REDSKINS: Receiver Pierre Garcon (toe) and safety Brandon Meriweather (knee) have been ruled out for tomorrow’s game against the Panthers.

BRONCOS: Cornerback Tracy Porter is doubtful for tomorrow’s game at Cincinnati as doctors continue to regulate his medication to control seizures.

VIKINGS: Wide receiver Percy Harvin returned to practice after missing Thursday’s session due to a “personal family matter,” but running back Adrian Peterson was absent. Both will be ready tomorrow in Seattle.

JAGUARS: Safety Dwight Lowery (foot) and cornerback Rashean Mathis (groin) were ruled out, and cornerback Derek Cox (back) was listed as questionable for tomorrow’s game with the Lions.

BEARS: Safety Chris Conte has been fined $21,000 by the NFL for striking Panthers receiver Brandon LaFell in the head and neck area when LaFell was defenseless.

SEAHAWKS: Two weeks after suffering a high ankle sprain, receiver Doug Baldwin is expected to play against the Vikings tomorrow.
