Some welcome post-Sandy aid

The Issue: The military and neighbors helping those struggling to recover in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.

***

Young men from the National Guard, Army, Air Force and others have descended upon our now frigid and littered streets in combat fatigues (“The Marines Have Landed,” Nov. 5).

They’re just a little older than my children, but they’ve exercised sound discretion and firm control over checkpoints.

They protect us from gawkers and looters, and secure space for scores of men who have come to restore utilities, assess structural conditions, clear streets, extinguish fires, remove water and rebuild.

I pray for the gentlemen in our armed forces, and for the hard-hatted ones who do the heavy lifting here at home, too.

Fine families across the nation continue raising their sons to be intelligent, honorable, kind-hearted and hard-working gentlemen like those who are transforming this town.

My thanks to the men on the streets, and the mothers and fathers who raised them.

Hurricane Sandy destroyed what was in its path and took away our electrical power, but it did not destroy the spirit to persevere and join together to help each other.

This is one of those times when we realize what is really important.
