Displaced NYers can vote anywhere: gov

New Yorkers displaced by Hurricane Sandy can show up at any polling place in the state today and vote for president, Gov. Cuomo announced yesterday.

Cuomo signed an emergency order allowing voters in the federally declared disaster areas of New York City — as well as Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland and Westchester counties — to file a paper ballot at another, more accessible polling site.

“Just because you’re displaced doesn’t mean you should be disenfranchised,” Cuomo said.

Voters outside their districts can cast ballots only in the presidential and senatorial races, not for local legislative contests.

Election officials warned that the requests for thousands of paper ballots will slow down voting and lead to longer lines.

In storm-stricken areas, the city Elections Board is diverting voters to 60 alternate polling sites, with shuttles helping beach-area voters go to and from the polls.
