No plans yet for Jets QB Tebow

When the Jets entered their bye week, coach Rex Ryan said one of the things he would examine would be a larger role for backup quarterback Tim Tebow.

Yesterday, Ryan was coy when asked if Tebow will indeed get more time in the second half of the season.

“I don’t want to get into specifics, but I guess we’ll see,” Ryan said.

Tebow has been used sparingly by the Jets, playing just 55 snaps through the first eight games — a surprisingly low number considering the buildup the Jets gave Tebow after acquiring him in the offseason.

Ryan has resisted pulling starter Mark Sanchez for Tebow despite public pressure to put Tebow in during the 30-9 loss to the Dolphins last week.

Ryan said the changes the Jets are making are not just about Tebow or Sanchez.

“It’s more about how we’re using everybody,” Ryan said. “Are there things that we can do to help this player, to help [that] player? Whatever it is, those are things we really are looking at.”

* Ryan hoped his team would get healthy over the bye week, and it appears it has in most areas. The only players who did not practice yesterday were LB Bart Scott (toe), RB Joe McKnight (ankle) and NT Kenrick Ellis (knee). Ryan said he is optimistic all of them might play.

S Eric Smith (knee), TE Jeff Cumberland (wrist) and RB Bilal Powell (shoulder), who all missed the team’s last game, could play this week. All were limited in practice yesterday.

* The Jets signed RB John Griffin and LB D.J. Bryant to the practice squad. They still have two open spots on the active roster to fill. … The Jets will travel to Seattle on Friday and stay on East Coast time. “Even though you’re out West, I think that helps it,” Ryan said. “It hasn’t been that big of an issue in the past. In fact, it’s been a good thing.” … The Jets distributed tips to their players on handling the conditions after the hurricane last week. One was recommending they study their playbook or game film on their iPad while waiting in line for gasoline.
