MLB: Mariners keeping Oliver Perez

Oliver Perez is staying with the Mariners. The former Mets left-hander and the club agreed to a one-year contract worth $1.5 million. Perez, who was released by the Mets in 2011, the final year of three-year, $36 million deal, was 1-3 with a 2.12 ERA this season.

Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers beat out Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen and Angels rookie Mike Trout for player of the year as voted on by their fellow major leaguers.

The Cardinals promoted John Mabry to hitting coach as the replacement for Mark McGwire, who appears headed to the Dodgers.

Rick Peterson, former pitching coach for the Mets and two other teams, is the leading candidate to be named as pitching coach of the Red Sox, ESPN reported.

FOOTBALL: K-State QB may play vs. TCU

Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said he is hopeful injured quarterback Collin Klein will be available for Saturday’s game at TCU. The Heisman Trophy candidate suffered what appeared to be a concussion during the No. 3 Wildcats’ 44-30 victory over Oklahoma State.

Joker Phillips, fired Sunday as Kentucky’s coach, will coach the Wildcats’ final two regular-season games.

NBA: Barea, Sloan warned for flopping

The NBA issued flopping warnings to Minnesota’s J.J. Barea and Cleveland’s Donald Sloan, the first two under a new policy designed to end the act. The second offense comes with a $5,000 fine, followed by $10,000 for a third, $15,000 for a fourth and $30,000 for a fifth. Additional flops after that could lead to a suspension.

ETC.: Rafter tops McEnroe in Garden tennis

Patrick Rafter defeated John McEnroe 8-3 in the pro-set final of the NASDAQ Indexes Cup last night at the Garden. In the one-set semifinals, the 39-year-old Rafter defeated 42-year-old Pete Sampras, 6-3, and the 53-year-old McEnroe beat 41-year-old Andre Agassi, 6-4.

Jim Flick, a golf instructor for more than 50 years whose clients included Jack Nicklaus, died in California of pancreatic cancer. He was 82. … ESPN radio announcer Jim Durham, who called NBA games for the network, died in Texas. He was 65.

Havre de Grace, the 2011 Horse of the Year, was sold for $10 million to Mandy Pope of Whisper Hill Farm at the Fasig-Tipton November sale in Lexington, Ky., the highest sale price for a horse since 2008. … Green Moon, 16-1, won the $6 million Melbourne Cup.
