Storm-wary NY pols say junk it to island junket

Call it lessons learned from the Marathon.

A post-Election Day confab for pols in sunny San Juan was scrapped late yesterday in the face of Sandy — and the nor’easter scheduled to blow in to the city as attendees were to blow out.

The annual Somos el Futuro (We Are the Future) conference was slated for tomorrow through Sunday at the Conrad San Juan Condado Plaza hotel, and was to feature a charity golf outing Thursday at the Trump International Golf Club.

“My colleagues and I believe it is imperative that we continue to work on getting all of our constituents the assistance they need to fully recover as quickly as possible,” said Assemblyman Felix Ortiz (D-Brooklyn), the conference organizer.

Ortiz said Latino state lawmakers will hold a conference in the city next month “to address the devastation brought to our communities.”

The cancellation followed bow-outs by numerous pols, including Democratic mayoral candidates and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan).

Assemblyman Karim Camara (D-Brooklyn) canceled, too, but previously defended the conference as business, “not a vacation.”
