Graciousness in defeat: The tough odds Mitt faced

The Issue: Mitt Romney’s loss in Tuesday’s presidential election and prospects for the US.

Mitt Romney may have lost the presidential election, but he won the hearts of most Americans with his concession speech (“Voters: Here We ‘O’ Again,” Nov. 7).

Straight from the heart came a lot of love for his family and, I think, all Americans.

Family values were his best message and best image. That won’t get lost in the crazy mix of politics and numbers.

He should start campaigning now for the next go-around.

Americans have voted to become a “Gimme, gimme” society.

With unemployment compensation being doled out indefinitely and promises of free health care and food stamps, why bother to go back to work?

Given the closeness of the popular vote and the content of Romney’s concession speech, why doesn’t President Obama put him to work, as he did Secretary of State Hillary Clinton after defeating her in the Democratic primary?

In the spirit of conciliation and as a step in healing this country, he should give Romney a position in his second administration.

Now that this divisive election is over, Obama should hire Romney to create those 12 million jobs he was talking about.

It would be a unique show of unity in these times of partisan fighting and could lead to a better economy, if Romney truly knows how to do it.Anita Pfeffer
