Iranian warplanes fired multiple rounds but missed an unarmed US drone on routine surveillance in international airspace last week, the Pentagon confirmed yesterday.
The unprecedented attack, on Nov. 1, triggered a sharp warning to Tehran through diplomatic channels, sources said.
It marked the first time Iran has opened fire on an unmanned US aircraft, in this case an MQ-1 Predator.
The Pentagon said two SU-25 Frogfoots intercepted the drone at 4:50 a.m. 16 nautical miles off the Iranian coast. International airspace starts at 12 nautical miles.
