Storm damage forces last-minute setup at Staten Island polling site

Workers scrambled at the last minute to set up a polling site on storm-ravaged Staten Island.

The feverish activity occurred Tuesday at Public School 52 in the Midland Beach neighborhood.

An hour before the 6 a.m. poll opening, flares were set up at the school entrance. There was no light at all.

Police helped the poll workers get gas for their generator.

The voting machines had to be retrieved from inside the school.

Heaters were stacked on tables in the tents. The temperature was around 29 degrees.

Meanwhile, some Staten Island residents didn’t know their polling place was moved.

School officials say several residents showed up at an original voting location, the Staten Island Academy.

There was no official signage at the academy Tuesday saying the polling place had been moved.

So the private school made a hand-written sign and placed it outside the driveway.

For anybody who arrived on foot, a city bus was ready to shuttle voters to the correct location.
