SoHo’s Boom is bust

A legendary SoHo celebrity hot spot that just celebrated its 20th anniversary is closing for good because of Superstorm Sandy.

Boom, at 152 Spring St., closed after itsf basement kitchen was flooded.

“The restaurant closed for the hurricane, but there is so much damage — more than $100,000 worth — that the restaurant will stay closed,” said Rocco Ancarola, a nightlife impresserio and former Boom partner.

“It’s very sad. Boom has been a part of our lives for so long. Now that time is coming to an end.”

Ancarola said the damages, plus soaring rent, — going up to $50,000 a month — made closing the only option.

“The rents are just ridiculous. It has become really hard for smaller restaurants and shops to survive when big luxury brands want flagships in SoHo, the Chanels and Louis Vuittons of the world, even though there are never people in those stores,” he said. “It’s just too costly to fix things up from the hurricane and fight the high rents.”

The restaurant has been a celebrity mecca since it opened in 1992, patronized by such Hollywood types as Al Pacino, Sylvester Stallone, Mick Jagger, Mark Wahlberg, Brad Pitt, Madonna and Mick Jagger, Francis Ford Coppola.
