MTA holds first hearing on fare hike, straphangers stay home because of storm

The MTA held its first public hearing on the fare hike tonight, but the stormy weather kept many straphangers at home.

Only 26 speakers came to sound off on the hikes, which could send the cost of a monthly MetroCard to $125.

Its currently $104.

“I’ve been going to these MTA public hearings since 1980 and this is the worst attended Brooklyn hearing I’ve ever seen,” said Gene Russianoff, staff attorney for the Straphangers Campaign, a subwa advocacy group.

The few who did come begged the agency not to hike fares.

“That’s like robbing people without a gun,” said Christine Williams, a subway station agent who said riders already complain about high fares.

“The public is tired. They are tapped out.”

The MTA said it needs to raise fares to fill a $450 million budget gap.
