‘High’ ballot turnout

Voters cast ballots to legalize pot — not just “medical marijuana” — in two states amid a raft of propositions, referendums and initiatives on Election Day.

Solid 55 percent majorities backed legal marijuana in Colorado and Washington state, setting up a confrontation with the US Justice Department.

“Federal law still says marijuana is an illegal drug, so don’t break out the Cheetos or Goldfish too quickly,” said Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, a Democrat who opposed legalization.

Unless the feds block it, Colorado’s measure will allow adults over 21 to possess up to an ounce of marijuana. Lighting up publicly is still banned. Also, individuals could grow their own — up to six marijuana plants apiece.

Washington’s measure establishes a system of state-licensed marijuana growers, processors and stores, where adults can buy up to an ounce.
