GRID: Tar Heels stop Virginia

Bryn Renner threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter after a goal-line stand preserved North Carolina’s lead as the Tar Heels (7-4, 4-3 ACC) posted a 37-13 victory at Virginia (4-7, 2-5).

Texas A&M freshman wide receiver Thomas Johnson was found safe in Dallas after he disappeared from campus three days ago.

The ACC agreed to a 12-year deal with ESPN for the rights to televise the Orange Bowl, with the conference champion facing either Notre Dame or a team from the Big Ten or SEC. The deal begins in 2015.

BLOTTER: Coach ripped off

The Redskins said coach Mike Shanahan had money and a passport stolen from the locker room during a game last month in Pittsburgh.

Marcus Vick, the younger brother of Michael Vick, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving on a suspended license in Hampton, Va. He received a 30-day jail sentence, with 20 days suspended.

Bob Hewitt, the former doubles champion, was suspended from the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I., after an investigation into allegations that he sexually abused girls he coached.

GOLF: Rory misses cut

Rory McIlroy, the defending champ, shot a 72 and was 12 shots behind Denmark’s Anders Hansen in the second round of the Hong Kong Open. … Suzann Pettersen shot a 6-under 66 to share the lead with So Yeon Ryu and Sun Young Yoo at the LPGA Tour’s Titleholders tournament in Naples, Fla.

Matthew Guyatt took a two-shot edge after the second round of the Australian Masters in Melbourne. … South Africa’s Merrick Bremner fired an 8-under 64 to take the lead at the South African Open.

HOOPS: Team loses 88-0

An Arkansas girls high school basketball team was shut out 88-0 earlier this week. Little Rock Hall coach Selita Farr pulled her starters early and told her team to “play soft’’ against J.A. Fair, a team with four freshmen and one senior.

LeBron James had 27 points and 12 assists as the Heat ended a 10-game drought in Denver with a 98-93 win over the Nuggets. Miami played without Dwyane Wade, who has a sprained left foot.

Cathy Rush, C.M. Newton, Morgan Wootten and the late Pete Newell were honored with the Lapchick Character Award at the New York Athletic Club.

SOCCER: Henry up for MVP

Thierry Henry of the Red Bulls is one of three finalists for Major League Soccer’s Most Valuable Player award along with San Jose’s Chris Wondolowski and Kansas City’s Graham Zusi. The winner will be announced on Nov. 29.

Negotiations are under way for LA. Galaxy star David Beckham to play about 10 games for an Australian league team this season.
