UMass shocks Providence at buzzer

Terrell Vinson’s tip-in as time expired gave UMass a 77-75 win over Providence in the opening round of the Puerto Rico Tipoff last night.

Trailing 75-72, UMass guard Jesse Morgan hit a 3-pointer with 1:22 left to tie the game. Morgan led the Minutemen (2-0) with 18 points. Bryce Cotton had a game-high 23 points for Friars (2-1).

N.C. State 72, Penn State 55

T.J. Warren had 22 points and eight rebounds to lead No. 6 North Carolina State (2-0) past Penn State (1-1) at the Puerto Rico Tipoff.

Oklahoma St. 69, Akron 65 (OT)

Phil Forte hit all his free throws after getting fouled while attempting a 3-pointer with 52 seconds left in overtime and Oklahoma State (2-0) beat Akron (1-2) at the Puerto Rico Tipoff.

Brian Walsh had 14 points for Akron, which failed to convert on the final possession of regulation with the score tied at 61.

Indiana 99, Sam Houston St. 45

Christian Watford scored 23 points to help No. 1 Indiana (3-0) defeat Sam Houston State (1-2) in the Progressive Legends Classic in Bloomington, Ind.

Louisville 80, Samford 54

Russ Smith scored a game-high 18 points as No. 2 Louisville (2-0) routed visiting Samford in the opening game of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament that continues next week in the Bahamas.

Kansas 69, Chattanooga 55

Freshman guard Ben McLemore had 25 points and eight rebounds, and No. 7 Kansas (2-1) used a big second-half charge to beat visiting Chattanooga (1-1).

Baylor 84, Boston College 74

Pierre Jackson had a season-high 31 points as the 16th-ranked Bears (3-0) rallied in the second half to beat the Eagles (1-1) in the Charleston (S.C.) Classic.
