Yankee ‘run’ on B’way

Those damn Yankees are coming back to Broadway.

Two producers who struck out with shows about football and basketball are now teaming up with the Yankees and Major League Baseball to bring pinstripes to the Great White Way.

The as-yet-untitled project is expected to hit the stage in late 2013 or early 2014 and will entice theatergoers with “the personalities, triumphs and private moments” of the 27-time World Series champs, according to a release from producers Fran Kirmser and Tony Ponturo.

The duo previously produced a couple of unsuccessful sports-themed plays — “Lombardi,” the life story of football icon Vince Lombardi, and “Magic/Bird,” which focused on famous basketball frenemies Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

A spokeswoman for the producers declined to say what the Yankee play would be about, or in what format it would be presented.

More details are expected to come out over the next few weeks, she added.

Yankee executive Lonn Trost said the team would be “opening our archives” for the project.

“Just as generations of fans have been captivated in their seats at Yankee Stadium, theatergoers will be able to experience the same drama and joy,” he said.

Tim Brosnan, executive vice president of business for the MLB, was also supportive.

“They will be a fascinating subject matter,” he said.

This won’t be the first time the Yanks have been on stage.

“Damn Yankees” premiered on Broadway in 1955, and a big-screen version of the musical arrived in 1958.

The play celebrated the jealousy other teams’ fans have for the game’s most celebrated franchise.

Ponturo, the Tony Award-winning producer of “Memphis,” made headlines in August after his spurned ex-wife wrote a musical about the breakup of their 34-year marriage.

The ex, Ruthe Ponturo, sold jewelry Tony Ponturo had given her and used the money to pay for the production of “Divorce — The Musical.”
