Looter tale bogus: cops

He tried to get sneaky during Sandy.

A Long Island sneaker store owner was charged yesterday with falsely claiming that thieves looted his shop of more than $60,000 worth of merchandise during Hurricane Sandy, Suffolk County police said.

Wilguens Mentor, 28, of Wyandanch, told cops on Oct. 31 that burglars took the goods from his Wheatley Heights store as the storm raged and that he planned on filing an insurance claim.

But detectives quickly determined that nothing had been taken and busted Mentor on charges that included attempted insurance fraud.
