Supermodel Kate Moss has disclosed that the late Lucian Freud, one of the great artists of the 20th century, tattooed two tiny swallows at the base of her spine. She estimated their value at $1.6 million.

In an interview with Vanity Fair magazine, she said that in 2002, Freud told her he’d served in Britain’s merchant marine during World War II “and he used to do all the tattoos for the sailors.”

“I said, ‘Oh, my God, that’s amazing,’ ’’ and he replied, “I can do you one.’’
