LIPA let long island down

The Issue: The Long Island Power Authority’s slow response to Sandy-related electrical outages.

Nicole Gelinas’ column on politicians sucking LIPA dry was very convincing (“Call It ‘LIPAsuction’” PostOpinion, Nov. 19).

I’d love to see a response from Gov. Cuomo or the alleged blood-suckers in Long Island.

The architect of the LIPA failure after Hurricane Sandy is former Gov. Mario Cuomo.

When he made the deal to close the Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant, he allowed electric rates to be raised 10 percent a year for five years, which made LILCO’s rates among the highest in the country.

He compounded the problem by having the state take over the electric half and forming LIPA. After taking charge of LIPA, given a choice between raising rates further or kicking maintenance down the road, state officials made a political choice and neglected maintenance in the hope they would have moved on when the bill came.

It’s ironic that Mario’s son Andrew was in office when disaster struck.
