Sanchez blooper fumble epitomizes embarrassing Jets performance

The Jets handed out scarves before last night’s game with the Patriots. They should have given out paper bags for fans to wear over their heads instead.

This was a Jets loss from the Rich Kotite era — a bumbling, embarrassing, humiliating thrashing from the Patriots that ruined the Thanksgiving of every Jets fan.

What a bunch of turkeys.

Rex Kotite, er Ryan, and Co. got blown out on national television in their own building, turning the ball over five times and losing 49-19 to Bill Belichick’s Patriots in front of an angry holiday crowd at MetLife Stadium.

At one point Ryan was caught by TV cameras saying “Un-bleeping-believable.” It got so bad “Fireman Ed” left at halftime.

“Obviously that was a nightmare of a game to say the least,” Ryan said.

The game got away from the Jets in a stunning, 52-second, second-quarter sequence when the Patriots scored three touchdowns — one on offense, one on defense and one on special teams. The sequence was the funniest thing NBC has shown on Thursday night since “Seinfeld” went off the air.

“Terrible,” linebacker Bryan Thomas said. “Awful. Everything. Terrible. There ain’t nothing left to say. It was terrible.”

The Jets are now 4-7, and any thought of them making the playoffs is laughable. They would have to run the table in their final five games, and they have not been able to win two consecutive games this season.

“We’re about as wounded as you can possibly be, but we’re not dead,” Ryan said. “We will give every ounce of energy we have to get this thing going.”

It was the Jets’ fourth loss in five games and the fourth consecutive loss against the Patriots. The memories of Ryan standing toe-to-toe with Belichick are fading.

The Jets were in the game for a quarter, then things spiraled out of control. The Patriots had a 7-0 lead when they took the ball over with 9:56 left in the first half. It took one play for quarterback Tom Brady to hit running back Shane Vereen on a swing pass that turned into an 83-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

Then things got really strange. Sanchez forgot the play he just called and opened the wrong way to hand off to Lex Hilliard. With no one to hand off to, Sanchez tucked the ball and ran … into guard Brandon Moore’s backside. He lost the ball and Patriots safety Steve Gregory scooped it up and ran 32 yards for a touchdown.

“I’m not a big believer in luck, but that was pretty unlucky,” Sanchez said. “It was really too bad.”

On the following kickoff, Jets return man Joe McKnight fumbled the ball when he took a hit from Devin McCourty. Patriots receiver Julian Edelman caught the ball in the air and ran 22 yards for the Patriots’ second touchdown in 19 seconds and third in 52, giving them a shocking 28-0 lead.

“That was crazy,” Sanchez said. “I’ve never seen anything like that. This is a team that you can’t turn the ball over against because they make you pay.”

The Patriots tacked on another touchdown minutes later on a 56-yard touchdown pass from Brady to Edelman that went over Jets safety LaRon Landry’s head.

The Patriots scored 35 points in the quarter despite having the ball for just two minutes, 14 seconds. The Jets kicked a field goal at the end of the first half to avoid a shutout.

Sanchez committed his first of two turnovers on the Jets’ second drive, a brutal interception to Gregory that started the Patriots’ first scoring drive of the game.

The Jets made a weak effort at a comeback in the second half, scoring a safety and a touchdown, but the game was over before people’s turkey was digested.

The Jets have five games left to play, but there is no doubt their season is over.
