COLLEGE: Vols fire Dooley

Derek Dooley was fired yesterday as Tennessee’s football coach. He owned a 15-21 record that included an 0-15 mark against Top 25 teams. Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney will serve as the Vols’ interim coach for Saturday’s game vs. Kentucky.

Maryland’s Board of Regents will meet at 9 a.m. today to vote whether to accept an invitation to join the Big Ten, a source told ESPN. If Maryland goes from the ACC to the Big Ten, Rutgers reportedly will follow suit.

GOLF: Jimenez takes Hong Kong

Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez, at 48 years and 318 days old, became the oldest European Tour winner by shooting a 5-under 65 to capture the Hong Kong Open for a third time. Ireland’s Des Smyth was 48 years and 34 days when he won the 2001 Madeira Islands Open.

Sweden’s Henrik Stenson shot a 71 to win the European Tour’s South African Open by three shots over George Coetzee. …. U.S. Women’s Open champion Na Yeon Choi shot a 2-under 70 to win the LPGA’s Titleholders by two shots over So Yeon Ryu in Naples, Fla.

Tommy Gainey won the Pebble Beach Invitational by one shot over Kirk Triplett and William McGirt. … Adam Scott shot a 5-under 67 to win the Australian Masters.

TENNIS: Czechs win Davis Cup

Radek Stepanek upset Spain’s Nicolas Almagro to give the Czech Republic a 3-2 win in the Davis Cup final in Prague and its first title as an independent nation. The 37th-ranked Stepanek beat his 11th-ranked foe 6-4, 7-6 (0), 3-6, 6-3. Earlier, Jose Ferrer kept Spain alive with a 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 win over Tomas Berdych.

ETC.: Ditka OK after stroke

Mike Ditka, the 73-year-old former Bears coach and Hall of Fame NFL tight end, was released from a hospital yesterday after suffering a minor stroke, ESPN reported.
