Fordham ekes out 1st win

Jeffrey Short hit a go-ahead layup with 52 seconds left and Fordham earned a 70-68 victory over Penn in an NIT Season Tip-Off consolation game yesterday in Bethlehem, Pa.

The Rams trailed 66-65 after Penn’s Steve Rennard hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:13 left, but Short’s layup put Fordham up 67-66.

Branden Frazier drained a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left to put Fordham (1-3) up 69-66. He finished with a team-high 19 points, boosted by 9-of-10 shooting from the free-throw line.

Chaminade 86, Texas 73

De’Andre Haskins scored 32 points as Division II Chaminade upset Texas, 30 years after the tiny school made its mark on college hoops with its famous upset over top-ranked Virginia.

The win was just Chaminade’s seventh at the Maui Invitational since the tourney started in 1984. The host team has lost 76 at the tourney in that span.

Illinois-Chicago 86, Iona 81

At the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Iona (2-2) squandered a 12-point lead in a loss to Illinois-Chicago. Lamont Jones scored 22 points for the Gaels.

New Mexico 66, UConn 60

Kendall Williams scored 15 points and New Mexico held off Conn (4-1) as the Lobos won the championship game of the Paradise Jam.

N. Carolina 95, Miss. St. 49

At the Maui Invitational, Leslie McDonald scored 21 points for No. 9 North Carolina (4-0).

Ariz. 94, Long Beach St. 72

In Tucson, freshman Brandon Ashley had 20 points in his first start to lead No. 10 Arizona (3-0).
