Walmart’s big box of help

The Issue: Walmart’s post-Sandy aid to New York and whether it should open a store in the city.

***

In a time of distress caused by Hurricane Sandy, Walmart showed up, while the dues-collecting union thugs and their puppet politicians just blew smoke (“Walmart’s Answer to NYC’s Slaps,” Naomi Schaefer Riley, PostOpinion, Nov. 15).

If they were honestly concerned for the folks in New York, they would welcome Walmart with open arms.

There is no downside: affordable merchandise, jobs for families and the young — to whom street crime is no stranger — conveniently located in a neighborhood starving for employment.

The only downside is the dancing that the paid-for politicians do to the tune of their union benefactors while people go without.

Riley’s opinion piece might as well have been written by Walmart’s head of public relations.

If Walmart is such a good neighbor and really cares about the well-being of those in need, then why doesn’t a majority of its employees have health insurance?

Why doesn’t Walmart pay a decent living wage? What are the people of New York City going to do with 200 jobs that are not full-time and do not come with health benefits?

Walmart jobs help nobody escape poverty except for managers and executives.

Do not insult my intelligence with claims about what a humanitarian company Walmart is while it won’t even treat its own employees with the decency and respect a human deserves.
