Christopher Columbus statue gets extended stay in living room exhibit

A popular large-scale installation of a living room surrounding a statue of Christopher Columbus in midtown Manhattan has been extended by two weeks.

The exhibition in the middle of Columbus Circle will run through Dec. 2.

“Discovering Columbus” by Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi has become a must-see cultural attraction in New York since it opened Sept. 20.

Visitors climb six flights of stairs for an up-close view of the 13-foot-high Columbus statue as well as views of Manhattan and Central Park. The statue rests atop a 60-foot-high granite column. Columbus’ marble features usually are visible only from afar.

The exhibit is presented by the city’s Public Art Fund, which says nearly 80,000 have seen it to date.
