STEP UP!: WE’RE NUTS OVER THE HOLIDAYS Tonight is opening night for George Balanchine’s production of “The Nutcracker,” now 58 years old, and as much a start of the holiday season as Black Friday stampedes. New York City Ballet’s version of the adventures of a little girl and her toy nutcracker magically come to life with more than 150 dancers and musicians, as well as two casts of 60 children. There are also hundreds of costumes (some weigh 85 pounds) — and a 1-ton Christmas tree that grows onstage from 12 to 40 feet tall. Maria Kowroski stars as the Sugar Plum Fairy, and though she’s danced the role for 15 years, its magic hasn’t dimmed. “It’s an honor to perform for so many young children experiencing ballet for the first time. ‘The Nutcracker’ encouraged me to dance, and it’s the jewel of the holiday season.” Through Dec. 30 at the David H. Koch Theater, Lincoln Center; 212-496-0600, nycballet.com. Tickets start at $29. — Leigh Witchel

GET STROLLING!: WALK THIS WAY Still feeling full from yesterday’s Thanksgiving dinner? Then go for a WOTT — the annual Walk Off the Turkey trek tomorrow along the West Side of Manhattan. Organized by the nonprofit Shorewalkers, the amble kicks off at 10 a.m. at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in the Battery, and ends up at the Little Red Lighthouse under the George Washington Bridge. “It’s about 11 miles, and we walk about two miles per hour,” says hike leader Cy Adler. “It’s a great way to see the city’s beautiful coastline — through seven different parks — but you have to be careful of the bikers,” he adds. Bring water, a snack and $3 for a contribution. Details at shorewalkers.org. — B.H. Alamy
