Tarnished Meeks: I’m a uniter

Rep. Gregory Meeks, the Queens Democrat long under scrutiny by federal authorities, held himself up as an example of bipartisanship yesterday.

During an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Meeks (right), who represents the Sandy-battered Rockaways, called for a “unified voice” in recovery efforts.

“This is not a Democrat or Republican issue,” said Meeks, whose district also covers some parts of Howard Beach. “This is an American issue. We come together and make sure that our citizens survive.”

He pointed to his post-Sandy work with Reps. Michael Grimm (R-SI) and Peter King (R-LI) as an example of officials from both sides of the aisle working together.

“For sure, people are still hurting . . . We can try to come together and speak with one voice,” Meeks said.

Last month, Meeks’ friend Edul Ahmad, a mortgage lender who gave the congressman a $40,000 private loan, pleaded guilty to a $50 million fraud scheme. Meeks never disclosed the loan on his financial-disclosure forms and paid it back only after the FBI started making inquiries.

The matter has also been subject to a long-running House Ethics Committee probe.

Meek has also tried to set up a meeting between Ahmad and Allen Stanford, the former Texas billionaire serving 110 years in prison for a $7 billion Ponzi scheme.

The Department of Justice is also probing how millions of dollars Meeks earmarked for the nonprofit Greater Jamaica Development Corp. has been spent.
