Jamison, Alexander back for Knights

Rutgers’ sputtering offense will get a boost with the return of running back Jawan Jamison and right guard Taj Alexander for tomorrow’s showdown with Louisville, with the Scarlet Knights’ first outright Big East title and BCS bid on the line. Both left Saturday’s 27-6 loss at Pittsburgh with injuries, and didn’t return.

Jamison — who has rushed for 1,004 yards and is the engine that drives Rutgers’ offense — suffered a sprained right ankle in the Nov. 10 win over Army, and left the Pitt game after re-injuring it in the third quarter.

The workhorse back, who had a school-record 41 carries against South Florida, has been limited to just 13 combined in the past two games, a big reason an offense that had averaged 26.5 points has been held to just 6.5 in that span.

Savon Huggins has been thrust into the lead back role in Jamison’s absence. When asked if the latter could be ready for double-figure carries tomorrow, coach Kyle Flood said, “ I think either of them could. I think both backs will be ready this week to carry as many times as they’re called upon to carry.”

Flood still hasn’t disclosed Alexander’s injury that forced him out of the Pitt game. But Alexander has recovered enough to make his third straight start in place of Andre Civil, who is sidelined with an ankle injury and hasn’t practiced this week.

“I think he can [play the whole game],” Flood said of Alexander. “You never can predict, because it’s just one hit the wrong way from getting twisted up a little bit. But the way he looks right now … I feel comfortable saying he can go the whole way.”
