Syria slay toll at 40,000

At least 50 people were killed in Syria yesterday as the death toll from more than a year of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad passed 40,000, human-rights activists said.

The bloodshed came from heavy clashes between rebels and government forces in Damascus and the shelling by Assad forces of the nearby towns of Hamouriya, Arbaeen, Dara’a, Hama and Idlib.
