Odd-even gas restrictions lifted

The first day of the holiday shopping season will be the last full day of post-Superstorm Sandy gasoline rationing in New York City.

The odd-even system ended at 6 a.m. today.

Mayor Bloomberg signed an order yesterday confirming that the restriction would expire.

He says more than 85 percent of gas stations in the city are now open, compared to 25 percent two weeks ago.

Under the rules, cars could be gassed up every other day according to the right-most digit of their plate number.

The system went into effect in the city on Nov. 9, after damage to gas stations and fuel-distribution networks led to hours-long lines. Last Sunday, Bloomberg extended the restriction.

Similar rationing has ended in New Jersey and on Long Island.
