Cards overturn Mizzou

Luke Hancock scored 19 points and Russ Smith had 18 points and six steals and No. 2 Louisville looked more like itself with an 84-61 victory over No. 13 Missouri last night in the semifinals of the Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Louisville had a rougher-than-expected opening-round game, a 51-46 victory over Northern Iowa, and coach Rick Pitino looked and sounded upset after the game.

The Cardinals (5-0) were back to being one of the better defensive teams in the nation against the Tigers (4-1), forcing 23 turnovers that the Cardinals turned into 31 points. Missouri’s Phil Pressey, considered one of the better point guards in the country, had eight turnovers.

Louisville will face No. 5 Duke in tonight’s championship game.

Duke 67, VCU 58

In Paradise Island, Bahamas, Mason Plumlee, a 6-foot-10 center who helped break VCU’s pressure, had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 5 Duke(5-0) over the Rams (3-2) in the semifinals of the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Ohio St. 91, UMKC 45

In Columbus, Ohio, Deshaun Thomas scored 15 of his 21 points as No. 3 Ohio State (4-0) coasted to a huge first-half lead on the way to a rout of overmatched Missouri-Kansas City (2-3).

The game was the final tuneup for the Buckeyes’ ACC/Big Ten Showdown matchup against No. 5 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Wednesday night.

Florida 79, Central Florida 66

In Gainesville, Fla., Kenny Boynton scored a season-high 24 points, Scottie Wilbekin added a career-best 17 and No. 7 Florida (5-0) beat Central Florida (3-2).

The Gators overcame a sluggish start, dominated the paint and pressed the Knights into 18 turnovers. Kasey Wilson led the Knights with 20 points.

Kentucky 104, LIU Brooklyn 75

In Lexington, Ky., Alex Poythress and Archie Goodwin each scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds as No. 8 Kentucky (4-1) ran away from winless LIU Brooklyn (0-4).

Julian Boyd and Jamal Olasewere each scored 22 points for the Blackbirds, who shot 42 percent.

Creighton 84, Wisconsin 74

In Las Vegas, Doug McDermott had 30 points and eight rebounds to lead No. 14 Creighton (5-0) past Wisconsin (3-2) for a spot in the Las Vegas Invitational final.

The Bluejays will play Arizona State, 83-68 winner over Arkansas, in the championship game today.

Michigan St. 70, Oakland 52

In East Lansing, Mich., Keith Appling shook off a sprained right ankle in the first half and finished with 20 points to help No. 15 Michigan State (4-1) beat Oakland (2-4) for the Spartans’ fourth straight win.

N.C. St. 82, UNC Ashville 80

In Raleigh, N.C., Richard Howell scored 23 points, including the go-ahead basket with 3:06 left, to help No. 16 North Carolina State (4-1) rally past UNC Asheville (1-5).

Gonzaga 72, Oklahoma 47

In Lake Buena Vista, Fla., Elias Harris scored 18 points and No. 17 Gonzaga (5-0) beat Oklahoma (3-1) in a semifinal matchup at the Old Spice Classic.

The Zags will play Davidson, which beat West Virginia 63-60, in tomorrow night’s championship game.

Oregon 83, UNLV 79

In Las Vegas, Damyean Dotson scored a team-high 19 points, including a short jumper from the key to give Oregon the lead for good and the Ducks (5-0) beat No. 18 UNLV (2-1) in the semifinals of the Global Sports Classic.

Oregon will face Cincinnato in tonight’s final.

Cincinnati 78, Iowa St. 70

In Las Vegas, Sean Kilpatrick made all 16 of his free throws and scored 32 points, leading No. 22 Cincinnati (5-0) over Iowa State (4-1) in the semifinals of the Global Sports Classic.

Minnesota 84, Memphis 75

In Paradise Island, Bahamas, Andre Hollins scored a career-high 41 points — 24 iof them n the first half — to lead Minnesota (5-1) to victory over No. 19 Memphis (2-2) in the consolation semifinals of the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Marist 50, Vanderbilt 33

In Lake Buena Vista, Fla., Devin Price and Isaiah Morton scored 13 points each and Marist (2-3) held Vanderbilt (1-3) to 23-percent shooting in a consolation-round game at the Old Spice Classic.

Columbia 75, Wayland Bapist 63

In San Francisco, Mark Cisco, Grant Mullins and Brian Barbour scored 14 points apiece, Cisco added eight rebounds and Columbia (4-1) rolled past NAIA program Wayland Baptist in the opening game of the Hilltop Challenge.

Eric Milam scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Pioneers, who treated the game as an exhibition.

FDU 63, Delaware St. 62

In South Padre Island, Texas, Kinu Rochford (19 points, 14 rebounds) scored on a layup with one second remaining to give Fairleigh Dickinson(1-3) the win over Delaware State (3-3) in the South Padre Island Invitational.

Providence 66, Fairfield 47

In Providence, R.I., Bryce Cotton scored eight of his 21 points during a game-breaking 17-0 run that carried Providence (4-2) over Fairfield (3-3). Derek Needham paced the Stags with 18 points.
