Walmart vs. the unions

Walmart and union-backed protesters found something fresh to argue about yesterday.

Labor groups had pledged to stage strikes, protests and other events at 1,000 Walmart stores nationwide on Black Friday, including the store in Secaucus, NJ.

But the giant retailer yesterday claimed the protests numbered “a few dozen” and were “greatly exaggerated” by protest groups, including OUR Walmart.

“The number of associates that have missed their scheduled shift today is more than 60 percent less than Black Friday last year,” Walmart spokesman Steve Restivo said. “In Secaucus, for example, we’re aware of one associate who called out.”

“Apparently Walmart needs a math lesson,” said Russ Davis, executive director of Massachusetts Jobs with Justice.

“The Black Friday Walmart strikes are unprecedented, with workers walking off the job in more than 100 cities nationwide,” Davis said.
