As many times as this old cow is milked (“Saturday Night Live,” “The Sopranos”) the idea of a Mafia capo going to a shrink is still as funny as it ever was. Here Robert De Niro (far left) is Paul Vitti, head of a notorious mob family who barely escapes a hit on his life ,which leaves him a wreck. The solution? Neurotic therapist Ben Sobol (Billy Crystal) who has his own set of issues. Hilarious.

Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon), seems like a conspicuous consumption airhead, but that doesn’t stop her from applying to Harvard Law School after her WASPy boyfriend (Matthew Davis) tells her she’s too “blonde,” as in shallow and dumb. It’s up to her to tackle law and fight for the rights of dumb blondes everywhere. Just delightful.

A great movie about the worst movie director the world has ever known, Ed Wood (Johnny Depp, below right). Ed was a terrible producer of awful plays in LA before he decided to get into the movie business, with his girlfriend, Dolores Fuller (Sarah Jessica Parker) and his wild group of friends. They included transsexual Bunny Breckinridge (Bill Murray), and drug-addled Bela Lugosi (Martin Landau). Ed went on to make the worst film ever made,”Plan Nine From Outer Space.”

There’s something to be said for spectacular special effects and this one is as special as it gets. An up-and-coming scientist, Will Rodman (James Franco) has been working on a serum to cure his father (John Lithgow) of Alzheimer’s disease. When a lab chimp goes on a rampage and Will’s program is shuttered, he takes the chimp’s baby, Caesar, home to raise. Good: Caesar is brilliant. Bad: Caesar is brilliant and organizes an army of superapes after being sent to a sanctuary.
