De Blasio blasts food firms’ ‘sick time’ hit at staffers

Cafeteria workers were served up a cold dish of corporate greed when they were docked sick time during Superstorm Sandy — but they got some help yesterday from Public Advocate Bill de Blasio.

He joined workers at a Manhattan rally and sent a letter to the seven food-service firms urging them asking for a restoration of the sick time.

“I urge you to reconsider your policy of docking workers sick time [when] their workplaces were closed or transportation was out of service,” de Blasio wrote to the food-service giants including Aramark and Sodexo. “Missing work in the days immediately following Hurricane Sandy was unavoidable.”

Some 4,000 members of Unite Here Local 100, who work in corporate cafeterias or catering firms, were told if they were not at work during the Monday and Tuesday when Sandy hit, they would be paid only by taking sick days or vacation time.
