Crooks plundered pricey provisions from schools devastated by Superstorm Sandy

Thieves ripped off tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment from up to 11 schools ravaged by Superstorm Sandy, authorities said today.

A Rockaway Park high school, Scholars’ Academy, lost 80 iPads as well as computers and calculators, said city government sources.

The iPads were stolen from a locked box, police said.

The Scholars’ Academy theft occurred sometime between Oct. 26 and Nov. 15, when it was finally reported to the NYPD, said police sources.

Sandy flooded Scholars’ Academy with about a foot of water, school workers say.

Custodians and contractors are scrubbing down and disinfecting the school on Beach 104th Street about a half-mile east of the Cross Bay Bridge.

Scholars’ Academy is expected to reopen Jan. 2. In the meantime, its students are taking classes at schools in Brooklyn.

Thieves took four walkie-talkies and three cameras from IS 34 in Tottenville, Staten Island and ripped off four digital cameras and $200 from IS 235 in Flatbush, Brooklyn, said city officials.

Computer equipment, cash raised for charity and candy were stolen from other schools, the Department of Education said.

Officials originally said as many as 30 schools were ripped off during the storm. They revised the number downward after examining theft reports.
