Downtown Brooklyn about to get a lot bigger

A growing cultural district that includes the Brooklyn Academy of Music is about to get a whole lot bigger.

Mayor Bloomberg today announced three major milestones for city-owned parcels in the culture-driven hood.

A development team of Gotham Organization and DT Salazar, Inc. will be building 600 apartments — half of which will be affordable units — as well as new cultural, community and commercial space on property bounded by Fulton Street, Rockwell Place and Ashland Place.

Meanwhile, developer Two Trees Management Co., known largely for its work in DUMBO, has begun the public review process on a 32-story, 300-plus-unit apartment tower for Flatbush Avenue and Ashland Place that will include cultural and community space and a public plaza.

The city yesterday been accepting proposals from developers looking to bring new residential, cultural and commercial space to a city-owned site lot at Ashland Place and Lafayette Avenue.

“Downtown Brooklyn has very quickly become one of the city’s most vibrant cultural destinations and an exciting place to live,” said the mayor.
