Check it out: $2B awaits you

Residents hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy are among those sitting on more than $2 billion in unclaimed money, according to the New York state Comptroller’s Office.

There’s nearly $10 million in unclaimed funds from uncashed checks, life-insurance payments, monies due to estates and stock dividends in Far Rockaway alone.

And ravaged areas of Staten Island, including New Dorp Beach, Midland Beach and Great Kills, are sitting on nearly $6 million in 13,000 abandoned accounts from banks, insurance companies, utilities and even gift cards that have not been touched.

“While the average claim is not likely to be vast, it is still important for those New Yorkers who have been devastated . . . to be reconnected with their hard-earned money,” said state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.
