MLB union head: Tougher drug test in 2013

In the wake of a baseball season featuring multiple high-profile suspensions for illegal performance-enhancing drug usage, Players Association executive director Michael Weiner said yesterday that drug testing likely would get tougher in 2013. Most notably, players could be tested for human growth hormone during the regular season.

“I’d expect to see an announcement before too long,” Weiner said, after the union’s executive board met at a Manhattan hotel. In 2012, players were tested for HGH only during spring training.

Former Yankees Melky Cabrera and Bartolo Colon both received 50-game suspensions because positive tests for testosterone.

Yankees center fielder Curtis Granderson and free agent Mariano Rivera, whose re-signing with the Yankees is imminent, both attended the meeting. Rivera spoke to the group about the union’s importance.
