Former Yanks’ catcher Martin reaches agreement with Pirates

The Yankees should hang a new sign at the stadium: Help Wanted — Catcher.

Russell Martin, as first reported by Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, has agreed to terms with the Pirates, pending a physical. The deal is for two years and worth $16.5 million. Last season, his second on a one-year deal with the Yankees, the 29-year-old Martin made $7.5 million.

Martin hit a career-high 21 home runs last season while hitting a career-low .211. On Wednesday, the Yankees signed one of their key free agents, veteran pitcher Andy Pettitte, to a one-year deal worth $12 million.

The Yankees are close to finalizing a 1-year deal with Mariano Rivera as soon as tomorrow.
