Quinn: Nix ‘Gropez’ district

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn yesterday demanded that a district map crafted to help embattled Assemblyman Vito Lopez run for a Brooklyn council seat be scrapped.

Quinn, a 2013 mayoral contender, asked the 15-member city Districting Commission to redraw the council’s new Brooklyn district lines following a blatant attempt to help Lopez.

Lopez has indicated he plans to leave the Assembly next year after being stripped of much of his power following sexual-harassment complaints lodged by staffers. He also quit his post as Brooklyn Democratic Party leader.

Quinn, who has been struggling to distance herself from the back- room deal for Lopez, penned a letter to the commission asking it to redraw the entire citywide map.

“The most significant concern I have relates to the new lines for District 34,” Quinn said, referring to the district Lopez into which was moved in an 11th-hour change. “I am requesting in the strongest possible terms that the commission withdraw its submission to the council to receive additional input from the public.”

The move comes more than a week after The Post exposed the boundary shift that was intended to help Lopez. The commission stuck his block of Stanhope Street currently in the 37th District into the 34th, where his power base lies.

Lopez could run for that council seat from any address, but he would have to move into the district by Election Day.
