Phillips misses Giants practice, but Coughlin optimistic

Kenny Phillips did not step foot on the practice field Thursday, and the next two days will tell if the rangy safety can avoid missing yet another game after aggravating a knee injury.

Coach Tom Coughlin said he hopes and anticipates Phillips will be able to get on the field today.

That could be wishful thinking.

After missing six consecutive games, Phillips hurt his right knee again in the 38-10 victory over the Packers. He’s expressed optimism it’s nothing serious and hopes he will be able to play Monday night against the Redskins. But Phillips has sounded positive before and ended up not being able to play.

There were six players on the initial injury report and only two of them, WR Domenik Hixon (ankle) and LB Jacquian Williams (knee), were able to practice on a limited basis. CB Jayron Hosley was added to the injury report after practice; he was limited with a shoulder issue.

Two starting offensive linemen, C David Baas (shoulder) and RT David Diehl (shoulder), did not work. RB Ahmad Bradshaw (foot) also was held out, as usual.

* Redskins CB DeAngelo Hall this week complimented WR Hakeem Nicks, calling him “a beast,’’ but for much of the season injuries have made Nicks far from terrifying for opponents. In the past two games, though, Nicks has 14 catches for 152 yards and one touchdown, showing signs that he’s returning to form.

Can Nicks be a beast again?

“I feel like I can be but it is going to take me working hard and getting that timing back with Eli [Manning] and playing within the offense, and everything else takes care of itself,’’ Nicks said.

* Eli Manning, asked what needed to improve from the first game vs. the Redskins, said “I had two turnovers last time in the game, so we need to fix that.’’

* WR Jerrel Jernigan and backup QB David Carr took turns simulating Robert Griffin III in practice, working on the scout team.

“They gave us great looks, they had us puzzled a little bit in some situations,’’ Justin Tuck said. “Lot of times our scout team doesn’t get the credit they deserve.’’ … Redskins LB London Fletcher (ankle) did not practice but it’s a pretty safe bet he’ll play, considering he’s played in 236 straight games. … OL Selvish Capers was re-signed to the practice squad.
