The devil you say

The Devil wears Prada and donates to Democrats — and it seems she’s come to collect her due.

Vogue editor and Obama mega-donor Anna Wintour may be named the next US ambassador to the UK, according to Bloomberg News.

Talk about a diplomatic downer: Wintour is renowned for her venemous persona (famously sent up in the 2006 film “The Devil Wears Prada”) — not for the delicacy of demeanor so central to statecraft.

Ah, but she’s given about $100,000 to Democrats in the past four years, and hosted two 2012 fund-raisers for President Obama, bundling some $2.7 million for the campaign.

That made her a Top 10 donor.

And money talks, especially in the Obama White House.

Obama’s current ambassador to the UK is a Chicago donor dubbed “the vacuum cleaner” for his ability to suck up campaign dollars for the White House.

Actually, it’s becoming positively old hat for presidents to send big-bucks buddies to the Court of St. James. George W. Bush and Bill Clinton appointed rich pals to be ambassador to the UK, as well.

But selling embassies to donors is more appropriate for invisible little countries like Luxembourg and Liechtenstein, not where long-lasting strategic alliances are on the line, as with America’s special relationship with Britain.

And speaking of Luxembourg — Obama’s first ambassador there was another campaign bundler named Cynthia Stroum.

She didn’t work out too well.

Stroum had to resign right as a State Department investigation found she’d been so “aggressive, bullying, hostile and intimidating” with her underlings that they requested transfers to Iraq and Afghanistan just to get out of harm’s way.

Sounds a bit like the Devil we know — the Vogue editor’s famous outbursts have been dubbed “Nuclear Wintour.”

Obama has already made clear his disdain for the US alliance with Britain.

But we think what remains of the special relationship demands a more tactful touch.

Some trial balloons need quickly to be shot down. Like this one.
