Agent: Cashman waiting for Yankees to free up money

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — According to what Scott Boras heard from Brian Cashman there is a sliver of hope for Yankees’ fans who are experiencing withdrawal over their team not spending more money to fill three colossal holes.

In an effort to reduce the payroll to $189 million in 2014, the Yankees have been idle at the Winter Meetings after allowing Russell Martin to leave for Pittsburgh, which gave him a two-year deal for $17 million before the meetings opened.

Yet, Boras, who represents free-agent outfielder Michael Bourn, got the feeling the Yankees general manager may receive some financial relief from owner Hal Steinbrenner

“I just I had a meeting with [Cashman] and he just said he is not in on a lot of players that he liked,’’ Boras said. “He would like to be in on more, but right now he is working with ownership to see where he can go. I don’t think any final decisions have been made, but at this point in time he is working through it.”

The Yankees allowed Martin to leave without making an offer though that left them with Francisco Cervelli, Austin Romine and Chris Stewart behind the plate. So far the Yankees haven’t shown any interest in free-agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski.

They never presented infielders Jeff Keppinger or Eric Chavez with offers, and they signed elsewhere yesterday instead of waiting to see if they could plug the Yankees’ third base hole created by Alex Rodriguez’s hip surgery.

In right field the Yankees have an interest in Ichiro Suzuki and made an offer to Nate Schierholtz, only to see him sign with the Cubs last night. They have avoided Josh Hamilton, B.J. Upton, Bourn, Shane Victorino, Nick Swisher and Angel Pagan who are all seeking mult-year deals.
