Yes, wespan in Brooklyn

There’s a brand-new Brooklyn bridge in town.

The $4.9 million span, which will open by the end of the month, will link Brooklyn Heights to the waterfront, more than 50 years after the tony neighborhood was cut off by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.

The 450-foot timber path will start at tiny Squibb Park near the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, and offer magnificent waterfront views as it descends 50 feet down to Brooklyn Bridge Park at Pier 1.

Along the way, the Squibb Park Bridge crosses Furman Street before zigzagging through trees and eventually around a hotel and condo complex set to break ground early next year.

“This is going to be fabulous for our community,” said Judy Stanton, executive director of the Brooklyn Heights Association.

She also pointed out that the new span will make it a lot easier to get to Brooklyn Bridge Park by subway.

City officials offered a preview tour yesterday of what they hope will become the city’s newest tourist attraction.

“This bridge marks a milestone in the transformation of our waterfront,’’ said Borough President Marty Markowitz. “It will make people watching on the other side of the river green with envy.’’
